ARTISTIC STATEMENT
WATERCOLOUR is one of my favourite mediums with its versatility and its
capacity for infinite surprises, thick or thin. My work evolves from a specific organic
image which nevertheless develops and elaborates itself through the very process of
painting it. The intensity of ACRYLICS furthers my study of colour juxtapositions and
stimulates my desire to portray movement.
Currently, my subjects range from the microcosmic to the macrocosmic'.
Hubble's Universe
The Hubble Space Telescope finally illuminates the striking colour and
dynamism as well as the mind-boggling dimensions of deep space. 1 have challenged
myself to adapt watercolour's wet-on-wet technique to express the heretofore unrevealed
kinetic brilliance of galaxies, nebulae, supernovae and so forth.
(Hubble's Universe A Portrait Of Our Cosmos by Simon Goodwin with a Preface by
John Gribbin, New York: Penguin Group, 1996.)
Immunity
Microphotography, magnetic resonance imaging, sonography et al unveil the
poignant elegance of cellular life, such as the immune response to microbial interlopers.
Again using watercolour's wet-on-wet, 1 attempt to recreate the fearsome beauty of
waging life and death, as well as symbiosis and warning signals, at the microcosmic
level.
(Incredible Voyage, Exploring the Human Body, forward by Sherwin B. Nuland,
Washington, DC The National Geographic Society, 1998.)
Time
Given the information overload and entrenched work ethic of our global
culture, I'm obsessed with time. As its passage spins out of control, I fight for moments
of Just being. The manmade concept and control of time must be cast aside for
creativity to occur. Through watercolour's fluidity, I've depicted seasonal passages and
the impact of artificial time on our blue planet.
